Could Charlotte Host a Super Bowl? Here’s What Still Needs to Happen

Charlotte wants a Super Bowl.

And with Bank of America Stadium getting a massive renovation, the Panthers investing heavily around Uptown, and Charlotte becoming a regular destination for major sporting events, it doesn’t sound as far-fetched as it once did.

But according to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, there’s still one major thing standing in the way: hotels.

Is Bank of America Stadium ready for a Super Bowl?

Not quite yet, but it will be.

Bank of America Stadium is in the middle of a $1.3 billion renovation expected to be completed by 2030.

Goodell has already said the renovated stadium will be “Super Bowl quality.”

And that’s not the only investment happening around it. Tepper Sports & Entertainment is also adding a new Panthers practice facility and a 4,400-seat indoor entertainment venue near the stadium.

So the stadium itself likely won’t be Charlotte’s biggest hurdle.

What’s actually holding Charlotte back?

Hotels.

The Charlotte region currently has 46,813 hotel rooms across 442 hotels, but the bigger issue is where those rooms are located and the level of service they provide.

Uptown has:

• 45 hotels
• 6,937 total rooms
• Only 3,894 luxury and upper-upscale rooms

South End, despite being within walking distance of Bank of America Stadium, currently has just one hotel.

For an event the size of the Super Bowl, the NFL needs enough full-service and luxury hotels near the stadium to accommodate teams, sponsors, media, executives and thousands of fans.

Does Charlotte need more hotel rooms overall?

Not necessarily.

Other cities have hosted Super Bowls with fewer total rooms than Charlotte.

The difference is that those cities often have a higher concentration of full-service hotels near their stadiums and convention centers.

So Charlotte doesn’t simply need more hotels.

It needs more of the right hotels in and around Uptown.

What else does Charlotte need to host?

Hotels and a renovated stadium are only part of the equation.

The NFL also considers:

• The city's overall vision
• Weather
• Local partnerships
• Venue and event infrastructure
• Fan experience

The Panthers would first need to formally express interest. From there, the team, City of Charlotte and NFL would work together on a proposal.

Ultimately, Charlotte would need approval from 24 of the NFL's 32 owners.

Could a Charlotte Super Bowl actually happen?

Eventually? Absolutely possible.

Right now, NFL leadership believes Charlotte has a stronger case for hosting an NFL Draft than a Super Bowl.

But the city is changing quickly.

By 2030, Charlotte could have a completely renovated Bank of America Stadium, a new Panthers training facility, another entertainment venue and potentially significantly more hotel development around Uptown and South End.

Super Bowl locations are already selected through 2030, so Charlotte has time to keep building its case.

So what’s the real takeaway?

Charlotte isn't Super Bowl-ready today.

But we're getting closer.

✔ $1.3 billion stadium renovation
✔ New sports and entertainment development
✔ Nearly 47,000 hotel rooms regionally
✔ A growing track record of hosting major events

The missing piece is building more high-quality hotel inventory close to Bank of America Stadium.

If Charlotte keeps developing at its current pace, hosting a Super Bowl might eventually go from a long shot to a legitimate possibility.
