How much would the Truist Field renovation cost?

According to the Charlotte Business Journal, the proposed renovation totals approximately $40 million, with funding divided among three parties:

  • City of Charlotte: $13.3 million
  • Mecklenburg County: $13.3 million
  • Charlotte Knights: $13.3 million

But there's a catch.

Approximately $5 million of the Knights' contribution has already been spent on new scoreboards.

That means of the roughly $35 million in remaining spending, approximately three-quarters would come from public funding.

Check out our full reel here!

How much money does Truist Field bring into Charlotte?

The Knights argue that the ballpark provides significant economic benefits.

According to a study commissioned by the team, Truist Field generates approximately $44.5 million in annual spending and supports 327 full-time jobs.

The team also credits the ballpark with helping attract approximately $1.5 billion in surrounding private development, including apartments, offices and other projects.

Those figures make up a central part of the team's argument for public investment, although they don't necessarily represent revenue returning directly to taxpayers.

Why does this matter for Uptown real estate?

Since Truist Field opened, the surrounding Third Ward neighborhood has undergone a major transformation.

Today, proximity to baseball games, restaurants, greenways and entertainment is a selling point for nearby condos and apartments.

The ballpark has become an important neighborhood amenity, helping make this section of Uptown a destination beyond traditional office hours.

But that raises a bigger question: how much public investment is necessary to maintain that momentum?

How does this compare to Charlotte's other stadium investments?

Charlotte has already made major financial commitments to professional sports facilities.

The city has committed $650 million toward Bank of America Stadium renovations and $275 million toward the Hornets' arena and practice facility.

Now, the Knights are requesting another $26.6 million in combined city and county funding.

Supporters see these projects as investments in tourism, jobs and economic development. Critics question whether public dollars should fund improvements to privately owned sports facilities.

Is $26.6 million a smart investment for Charlotte?

That's the debate.

Truist Field has helped shape Third Ward into one of Uptown's most recognizable entertainment districts, and the Knights argue that continued investment will help preserve its economic impact.

But with a team purchased for an estimated $100 million, some residents may question why taxpayers should cover most of the remaining renovation costs.

What do you think? Is $26.6 million a worthwhile investment in Uptown Charlotte, or should the Knights pay for their own upgrades?
